Foundations of Numerical Reasoning in Grades K-2

As teachers, many of us are being asked to teach elementary math WAY different than we learned it ourselves. This can make it really difficult to meet the needs of all your students.

My 6-week, asynchronous workshop will support you in building a conceptual understanding of numerical reasoning in a K-2 classroom.

Spring 2025

Registration for my next six-week Foundations of Numerical Reasoning online workshop opens on January 24, 2025, at 8 am Pacific Time. This $345 workshop begins on February 10 and ends on March 22, 2025. Standard access to the workshop content continues until May 31, 2025, and extended access continues until February 10, 2026.

Foundations of Numerical Reasoning in Grades K-2 is an asynchronous workshop, which means that there are no set meeting times, and you get to learn at your own pace.

Please send me a reminder!

Registration opens on January 24, 2025, at 8 am Pacific Time.

Foundations of Numerical Reasoning in Grades K-2

There's a lot of math happening in our K-2 classrooms but at times, it can be hard to make sense of it all.

There has to be a better way...and there is!

What is a balanced approach to math instruction?

A balanced approach to building numerical reasoning - Each module is specifically designed to ensure that you and your students are engaging in the three aspects of rigor with equal intensity.

Launch the Concept

Application - Learn how to facilitate a 3-act task and problem-based lessons to launch the concept for an upcoming unit. We'll leverage these tasks as formative and diagnostic assessments to uncover student thinking.

Connecting and Extending our Thinking

Conceptual Understanding - Through the use of manipulatives, tools, and models, we'll unpack the progression of learning to meet the needs of your students.

Building Fluency

Procedural Fluency - Build fluency the right way with purposeful practice. We'll engage in strategy-based games that keep students engaged in a fun and meaningful way.

What are the modules?

There are six modules that walk you through the progression of numerical reasoning. Each module focuses on a balanced approach like above.

Module 1: Early Number and Counting

Module 2: Building Fluency through 20

Module 3: Building Fluency through 120

Module 4: Building Fluency through 1000

Module 5: Number and Measurement

Module 6: Number and Statistical Reasoning

Hi, I’m Graham. Over the last 20 years, I've had the amazing opportunity to serve as a classroom teacher, a math instructional coach, and a district coordinator.

Having worked with teachers and students across the globe I've really been able to see the importance of understanding the progression of learning. This has allowed me to be much more intentional and purposeful as a teacher, allowing me to meet students where they are on their math journey.

My Foundations of Number Reasoning Workshop is designed to empower you to do the same. All of us are smarter than one of us and I want to support you AND your students.

My promise to you...

Building Capacity

Build and extend your own numerical reasoning through the lens of conceptual understanding.

Balance

Identify how to find a healthy balance between conceptual understanding, application, and procedural fluency.

Formative Assessment

Analyze student thinking and reasoning to determine your next steps as the teacher.

Build Understanding through Coherence

Empower your students by intentionally connecting lessons and ideas to uncover the next "ah-ha" moment.

Time

Learn how to connect multiple concepts which frees up more of your time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

You can find the workshop's start and end times listed at the top of this page under the video. If for any reason you need more time, just email me at graham@gfletchy.com and we can talk about an extension.

There are six modules in total. Each module contains a video that's about an hour but we hit pause along the way to tackle some tasks, work through some activities, and play some games. You can expect to spend approximately 2 hours on each module. All of the models are completed asynchronously, which means that you get to learn at your own pace.

The workshop costs $345. You have the option of paying by purchase order or credit card.

You get to choose how long you have access for. Standard access is four-months long and costs $345 while extended access is twelve-months long and costs $414.

If you need professional development for your teaching credential license certificate my workshop might be able to help you out. Just go to Grassroots Workshops and check out the information where you live. After you have completed the workshop you will receive a certificate of participation.

We sure do. Check out this link to learn more.

If you complete my workshop and do not learn anything you can use with your students, email me at graham@gfletchy.com within 10 business days of the workshop ending and I will give you a full refund.

You don't need to teach and learn math alone.

I want to walk alongside you and give you the tools you need to move your students through a progression of numerical reasoning.

Our Partnership With One Tree Planted

One workshop = one mangrove tree.

Because climate change is one of the biggest threats to our planet, we decided to partner with One Tree Planted to plant a mangrove tree every time there’s a new workshop registration.

Every workshop registration helps restore critical mangrove ecosystems that, according to the organization, help “protect vulnerable communities from rising sea levels and storm surges while also preventing soil erosion.”

Continue your growth while contributing to mangrove forest growth at the same time.
